The Science of Light

Low level laser or light therapy is a treatment that utilizes specific types of light to interact with tissue. It is used to eliminate pain and promote healing for a variety of medical conditions.

There are currently 4,000 scientific papers and another 400 clinical studies that support the efficacy of light therapy. A great deal of the initial landmark research on light therapy was conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This research acted as a spring board for many of the studies that followed.

The research has determined that a red light (660 nm) penetrates the epidermis, dermis, fat, and muscle. In the Bioflex laser, the red light is followed by a white light (840 nm) which penetrates deeper into the muscles and bone.

When effectively applied, this process initiates a series of physiological reactions within the tissue cells that leads to the restoration of normal cell structure and function. It is a treatment that is non-invasive and non-toxic, and multiple studies show greater improvement in the tissues than with inflammation medications. Dr. Fred Kahn, MD, FRCS was the inspiration of the research and has been a leader and innovator in laser therapy for over 20 years.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Decreased pain

  • Decreased use of medications

  • Non-invasive, non-toxic

  • No adverse effects or drug interactions

  • Prolongs need of some surgeries – buys more time for knee and hip surgeries

  • Alternative for patients that have not responded to conventional treatment

Physiological Effects – There are Increases In:

  • Production and release of Endorphins

  • Tissue repair and production of ATP

  • Cellular metabolism

  •  Protein synthesis

  • Collagen and fibroblasts

  •  Venous flow and oxygen saturation

  •  Enhanced immune response

The following are some of the conditions that research has shown to help:

Arthritic Conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Ankylosing Spondylitis

  • Tissue repair

  • Wound healing over scars or sores

Repetitive Strain:

  • Rotator cuff injuries
