Tongue Posture

Does your tongue rest on the roof of your mouth?

If not, then you could be experiencing any of the symptoms associated with motor control impairments of the jaw, lips, and tongue – including jaw pain, clenching/grinding, sleep apnea, crooked teeth, and more!

It is not as easy as saying “just change where you rest your tongue,” which is why our physiotherapist will guide you through an evidence-based exercise protocol and work in collaboration with your dentist to obtain the best results.

To begin, try the “chin tuck” exercise:

  • Sit upright facing forwards and place your fingers on your chin

  • Without pushing through your fingers, pull your chin and head backwards until you feel a stretch at the base of your skull

  • Do not tilt your head to look up or down

  • Hold for 5 seconds, and then relax

  • Repeat 10x

Osteopathic manual therapy and modalities such as acupuncture and dry needling may also be used to optimize function of the nerves, muscles, ligaments, and bones that are in relation to the jaw, tongue and throat.
