What is a pelvic health physiotherapist?
By Haley Flewwelling, Physiotherapist
A pelvic health physiotherapist has specialized training in the assessment and treatment of conditions that involve the pelvic system. A thorough pelvic exam will include internal and external techniques to assess the flexibility, strength, endurance, and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles. Your therapist will also assess changes in intrabdominal pressure with movement or exercise.
The Cochrane collaboration (2010) concluded that pelvic health physiotherapists should be the first line of defence for stress, urge, and mixed incontinence. Dysfunction in the pelvic floor can create symptoms of incontinence, constipation, pain in the low back, hips, knees, genital region or tailbone, pain with intercourse or menstruation, prolapse, or pelvic floor spasm.
Pelvic health physiotherapy is valuable in all phases of life including childhood, pregnancy, pre and post natal, perimenopause/postmenopause, and geriatric.
