Ask Team Beech Street: Morning Soreness
Q: What can I do to help reduce the pain and stiffness I feel when I wake up in the morning?
A: Waking up with soreness is common, especially as we age—though it will usually go away after 10 or so minutes of movement. You may not be able to completely reduce morning stiffness, try some of these tips to help you wake up more refreshed and ready for the day!
More move! Regular movement throughout the day can help keep your muscles strong and joints healthy. If you work at a desk all day, make sure to include breaks in your schedule for movement and exercise. As an added bonus, you might even be more productive!
Reduce stress! Going to bed relaxed can help to keep your body (and mind) relaxed through the night, giving you a more restful sleep. Check out these tips for reducing stress or try this mindfulness exercise.
Find the right pillow! There are different types of pillows based on how you sleep. i.e. back sleeper, side sleeper, stomach sleeper, or a combination. Most mattress stores have a variety of pillows and knows which are best for you sleeping style, plus you can try them out in the store on their comfy mattresses. The right pillow will help you sleep more comfortably and can help reduce soreness and muscle strain.
Stretch! Do a few restorative yoga poses or simple stretches before bed to relax your mind and body.
Sun and Fresh air! Get outside and enjoy the fresh air and sun. Getting outside more during the day positively impacts your physical and mental health, especially sleep. Plus, on sunny days you will enjoy a good dose of vitamin D.
Eat well and hydrate! Aim to eat a healthy and well-balanced diet. You might also want to consider adding more anti-inflammatory foods to your day. As always, stay hydrated, especially if you are getting out and moving more!
