Headaches

Headaches can be classified into various types based on their characteristics and underlying causes. Here are some common types of headaches.

Tension headaches: These are the most common type of headaches. They typically cause a dull, aching pain on both sides of the head. Tension headaches are often caused by stress, muscle tension, poor posture, or eye strain.

Migraines: Migraines are more severe and often accompanied by other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and sound. They can cause throbbing or pulsating pain on one or both sides of the head. Migraines can be triggered by hormonal changes, certain foods, stress, bright lights, or strong smells.

Cluster headaches: Cluster headaches are extremely painful and occur in cycles, often at the same time of day or night. They primarily affect one side of the head and are accompanied by symptoms like redness and tearing of the eye, nasal congestion, and restlessness. The cause of cluster headaches is not well understood.

Sinus headaches: These headaches are often associated with sinusitis, which is inflammation or infection of the sinuses. Sinus headaches usually cause pain or pressure around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead. Other symptoms may include facial tenderness and congestion.

Hormonal headaches: Women may experience hormonal headaches around the time of their menstrual cycle due to hormonal imbalances. These headaches can be migraines or tension headaches.

It's worth noting that there can be other less common types of headaches as well. If you're experiencing frequent or severe headaches, it's always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional and get treatment at Beech Street Health Centre.
