Too Hot to Handle! Tips for Being Active in Hot Weather

If you like to be active outdoors, read up on these tips for staying cool and healthy during the heat!

  1. Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after your outdoor activities.

  2. Take it easy! Heat and humidity can quickly wear you down and you might not be able to do what you do normally. Start slow and increase your intensity as your body adapts to the heat.

  3. Snack attack! Have fruit on hand to help maintain your energy. Bonus: This will also help keep you hydrated.

  4. Keep it loose and light—your clothing that is! Dark, heavy or tight-fitting clothes will heat you up faster.

  5. Change the timing! Try planning for outdoor actives in the early morning or later in the evening. During the mid-day heat relax in the shade or take a swim to cool off.

  6. Be cool! If you’re feeling any of the following find some air-conditioning:

    • Weakness

    • Light-headedness or Dizziness

    • Headache

    • Muscle cramps

    • Nausea or vomiting

  7. Stay in! If it’s too hot, plan you outdoors activities for another day.
